Global warming is nowadays shaping up lives of growing number of people in many parts of the world and is high on the agenda of public discussions. The question often asked in this context is: can we do something about that? The presentation will address this question from the perspective of Earth system science. Observational evidence for the evolution of climate in the past 150 years will be presented. Physical aspects of human interference in the global climatic system and possible ways of limiting the progressing global warming through various schemes of modification of radiative balance of the Earth will be discussed. Major findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, will be presented and discussed
