Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) of melanin in melanoma. Challenges and clinical opportunities

May 28, 2025 , 13:00 14:00

Prof. Bernard Gallez(Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain Drug Research Institute, Belgium, https://ieprs.org/award/bernard-gallez/

Abstract: Over the last decades, the incidence of melanoma has been continuously increasing. Melanoma is the most aggressive skin cancer, significantly reducing survival rates for patients in its advanced stages. Early diagnosis remains the key to change the prognosis of patients with melanoma. Eumelanin, the main pigment present in pigmented melanomas, is paramagnetic.  Melanin can be detected by a magnetic resonance technique, namely electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). This seminar will present a journey in research on melanin using EPR spectroscopy and imaging, from fundamental studies carried out in vitro to applications to human biopsies, then to application in vivo in animal models, and finally to noninvasive clinical studies on hundreds of healthy volunteers and patients.
