This talk will review several scenarios where the photon counting technique allows one to exceed performance of conventional protocols.
Examples include superresolution imaging by spatial mode demultiplexing and efficient optical communication in the photon-starved regime.
The common feature is that very few photon counting events can provide a lot of of relevant information about the quantity of interest.
