I show in a pedagogical way how to describe quantum evolution which takes into account nontrivial interaction of the system and its environment. Such evolution is no longer unitary and hence can not be described by the Schrödinger equation. An elegant solution of this problem provides another example of an intricate connection between physics and mathematics.
