Consider all real symmetric or complex Hermitian matrices with a directed graph G. We give an introduction to the study of the possible multiplicities of the eigenvalues of such matrices. For example, when G is a tree, the maximum multiplicity is the path cover number of the tree. We may also discus the non Hermitian case. Some of the issues covered by the talk were inspired by the problems originating from physics.
